About the role
£140,000–£150,000 base + bonus
A fast-growing global SaaS company in the commercial maritime and commodity trading industry is hiring a Principal SRE to grow its Google Cloud footprint. GCP is a board-level priority and central to the company’s AI strategy. This is a newly created role, not a backfill.
You’ll design, build and run the cloud infrastructure behind a platform used by many of the world’s leading shipping organisations. That platform includes real-time vessel tracking and AI-driven data products that process billions of data points. The work is part greenfield and part stewardship. You’ll build infrastructure for new applications from scratch, and you’ll make the existing GCP and AWS estate more consistent, easier to monitor and easier to run. You’ll have real influence over the platform’s architecture.
You’ll be a senior individual contributor with no direct reports, but you’ll be expected to lead technically. That means mentoring, training the team on GCP and getting agreement across engineering teams.
What you would do
* Design and operate scalable, secure infrastructure across GCP and AWS
* Lead greenfield builds and bring existing infrastructure onto common patterns
* Solve problems that span regions, accounts and clouds, such as networking, identity and data movement
* Automate infrastructure with Terraform, Terragrunt and Atlantis
* Own monitoring, alerting and observability
* Set technical direction through design reviews, architecture proposals and clear documentation
* Improve incident response and reduce cloud costs
Stack GCP (GKE, Bigtable, Cloud SQL, Dataflow, Pub/Sub, BigQuery), AWS (multi-region, multi-account), Kubernetes (GKE/EKS), Terraform, GitLab CI, ArgoCD, Grafana, OpenTelemetry, Splunk and Sentry. AI tools include Claude, Bedrock, Gemini and Vertex AI.
What they are looking for
* Strong hands-on GCP experience running production workloads at scale. 5+ years is ideal, but 2–3 years alongside solid AWS experience will also be considered.
