About the role

Principal IS API Platform Engineering & Enablement builds and operates enterprise tools that help teams develop, publish, safeguard, discover, and manage APIs in a consistent manner. The group delivers reusable platforms, automation, standards, and engineering mentorship across AWS API Gateway, Apigee, the API Management Hub, and developer enablement experiences. Our mission is to support APIs functioning as secure, reusable products by providing scalable platform capabilities, consistent governance, and an effective self-service developer experience.

As a Sr. Consultant - Infrastructure Engineering at Principal, you will be a senior hands-on engineer entrusted with independently managing complex API platform capabilities from creation through production support. This role integrates software engineering, cloud platform engineering, API lifecycle management, automation, operational reliability, and technical mentoring across distributed teams. This is a remarkable opportunity to work on innovative technology and contribute to a world-class team!

What you would do

* Coordinate the build, engineering, development, and production support of the API platform and self-service capabilities, including the API Management Hub and developer portals. * Develop secure, reusable AWS components using AWS CDK and TypeScript across API Gateway, Lambda, IAM, DynamoDB, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, CloudWatch, and Route 53. * Build API management functions in AWS API Gateway and Apigee, addressing proxies, products, developer applications, policies, traffic controls, and platform integrations. * Lead the oversight of the API lifecycle including OpenAPI specifications, linting, cataloging, versioning, deployment, deprecation, reuse, and onboarding. * Implement API security measures using OAuth 2.0, OIDC, JWT, API keys, IAM, TLS/mTLS, secrets management, and least-privilege access. * Develop CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code automation through GitHub Actions and AWS CDK, incorporating automated testing, review, documentation, and engineering quality controls, including AI-assisted techniques when suitable. * Ensure production stability through observability, incident and root-cause resolution, vulnerability remediation, disaster-recovery validation, and technical mentorship across engineering teams.

What they are looking for

* 10–12 years of hands-on software, API, cloud, platform, or integration engineering experience delivering complex technical solutions independently. * Strong development experience in TypeScript/Node.js, with working knowledge of Python. * Practical experience working directly with AWS CDK and API or event-driven services, such as API Gateway, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch, DynamoDB, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, and Route 53. * Hands-on experience with AWS API Gateway or Apigee; knowledge of both platforms is preferred. * In-depth understanding of REST, HTTP, OpenAPI/Swagger, API versioning, error handling, rate limiting, backward compatibility, and API security through OAuth 2.0/OIDC, JWT, API keys, TLS/mTLS, IAM/RBAC, and secrets management. * Experience developing CI/CD pipelines and automated quality checks using GitHub Actions, testing frameworks, code scanning, and deployment automation. * Experience in observability and production support, encompassing logs, metrics, alerts, tracing, incident troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and improving system reliability.
